Sycamore uses the term "Field Testing" a lot. What does it mean?
Field testing is a term that was made popular by Google that means to deploy something to the field in an unfinished state in order to gather direct customer feedback.
The mobile app is currently in field testing. With as big an undertaking as this project has been, we wanted to get it into the hands of our customers as soon as we could to get real-world feedback.
In field testing, the product may not be completely polished. In the case of the app, many features are working perfectly but we are not yet finished adding functionality.
With your help, understanding and constant usage we hope to deliver a product that will be extraordinary. Please check the Release Notes for more updates.
What is the difference between a "web app" and a normal app?
A web app is an application that is accessed from your phone or tablet's mobile browser. A normal or 'native' app is downloaded from an app store like iTunes or the Android Market Place.
Why did you not create a normal app?
Native apps only work on a specific phone type: ie, apps written for the iPhone only work on iOS (Apple) products. If we had gone this route,
we would have had to create multiple versions of the same app to work on all types of device. This approach would have led to increased production cost and time.
By developing a web application, we've broadened our reach and reduced our cost. Our web app can be accessed by almost any web enabled device out there (phones, tablets, etc). Sycamore's philosophy has always been to keep our costs down so we can in turn keep our product super affordable.
By building a web app, we're letting the largest number of people take advantage of this service at a fraction of the cost!
Can I as a parent get my email on this application?
This application isn't going to enable you to access your school email. Our web app is mainly focused around accessing school information from your Sycamore site and displaying it in a nice, touch friendly environment. Luckily, almost every mobile device out there has an email app that you can set up to access your school email.
From what devices can I get access to this application?
The beauty of a web application is that pretty much every modern mobile device (iPhone, iPad, Android phones and tablets, Windows Phone 7 devices, etc) has a browser capable of accessing the app. Even your desktop computer can pull it up if you really wanted to (just be warned- the app was made for use with a very small screen, so it may look a little goofy on a huge computer monitor).
Please realize, however, that because we are aiming to give access to as many devices as possible everything may not look perfect on every device. If you notice any errors, please report them via Support Ticket.
I really want that icon on my phones screen to click on- any solution?
We can do that! Both iOS (Apple) and Android devices allow you to bookmark a web page (m.sycamoreeducation.com) and create a shortcut for that bookmark on your home screen. We even have a lovely icon that shows up for you. This way, any time you want to view our app, just click the icon and away you go!
Will parents and students be able to view classroom news articles?
At this moment, the app will allow parents and students to view only school news and events. We are undecided about classroom details. In the coming months we will be adding more functionality to the classroom homepages for teachers and welcome any feedback you may have.
I can't do/see _____ but I can when I log in from the computer. What's up?
When we started developing our mobile application, we never envisioned it to be a complete replacement of our full online product. Sycamore Education has over 200 features and to include all of them would be the definition of a non-user friendly experience. We wanted our customers to have access to core information with the flexibility to access it from a mobile device.
With that being said, please continue to let us know what you would like to see in this app. We are working toward the goals defined internally, but Sycamore has always prided ourselves on being a customer driven product.
We will continue to update this FAQ section as questions are submitted.
